The prevention of an Ear Infection

A question as big as 'how an ear infection can be prevented' demands twice as big an answer... Since about 9,450,000 Americans experience some form of ear disorder each year. There are different forms and types of ear disorders, and so there are considerable measures to be taken to prevent the severity of ear infections.

For your convenience, these measures are classified according to the type of infection you or child is suffering from:

Improving the functions of the Eustachian tube. The Eustachian tube is a perfect medium for bacteria and viruses, especially when either the nose or throat is already infected...

  • Do not drink while lying down since it may cause imbalance in the external pressure against the inner ear.
  • Avoiding irritants that cause throat or upper respiratory disorders is the best way of protecting the Eustachian tube.

Boosting the functioning of the immune system. Children have weaker immune systems so it is harder for them to fight infections...

  • Consider breastfeeding, the best way of boosting the proper functioning of the immune system.
  • Avoid irritants such as first and second hand cigarette smoke since it is harmful to your immune system.
  • Vaccination or use of vaccines is also another effective method of ensuring the proper functioning of the immune system, although they may be harmful to some children.
  • A balanced diet is advisable for proper functioning of the immune system.

Decrease exposure to common ear pathogens (a living micro-organism such as bacterium)...

  • Frequent hand, toys and tool washing can lessen the risk of exposure to ear pathogens.
  • Avoid water when you bath or shower or hair sprays from entering the ear canal.
  • Air conditioners and air filters may decrease the prevalence of airborne pathogens.
  • Identify and avoid exposure to allergens that may increase the risk of ear infections.
  • Avoid the overuse of antibiotics since they may stimulate bacteria that cause other severe disease... such as an ear infections.

In winter season, most children playing in groups larger than 6, are likely to contract otitis media... So it is advisable to minimize contact with other children to avoid bacteria transmission.
