Vasomotor Rhinitis

Rhinitis is the inflammation of the nasal lining, which is commonly characterized by a runny or blocked nose. The nasal linings or mucous membrane often swell or become irritated due to factors pertaining to dryness. This condition is called vasomotor rhinitis. Besides swallowing problems, chronic sinusitis, and inhalants another cause of post nasal drip is rhinitis.

Other types of rhinitis include:

  • Acute rhinitis
  • Chronic rhinitis
  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Atrophic rhinitis

Symptoms of vasomotor rhinitis

Most researchers believe that the following factors are responsible for vasomotor rhinitis:

  • Recurring nasal inflammation
  • Nasal congestion
  • Blocked nose due to nasal membrane swelling
  • Sneezing
  • Watery nasal discharge
  • Post nasal drip

If your symptoms match these ones you might be suffering from vasomotor rhinitis (induced post nasal drip). See your physician, preferably an otolaryngologist, for diagnosis and treatment options. Note that decongestants are not a good treatment option for vasomotor rhinitis.

Treatment plan that your doctor may prefer for vasomotor rhinitis include vaporizers and moistening the house air.

Causes of vasomotor rhinitis

The following are possible causes of rhinitis. Although similar to those of other upper respiratory infections, causes of rhinitis may include:

  • Upper respiratory infections
  • Bacteria and viruses
  • Allergies
  • Inhalants (especially chemicals)
  • Common colds

Other factors that may trigger post nasal drip

Various factors contribute to the over-production of mucus and nose glands irritation, thus triggering post nasal drip. Besides vasomotor rhinitis, inhalants and swallowing problems, the following factors may trigger post nasal drip:

  • Cold temperatures
  • Sinus or nasal infections
  • Pregnancy and changes in hormones
  • Low humidity
  • Side effects of other medication
  • Nasal tumors
  • Gastroesophageal reflux
