Otolaryngology is an abbreviation of the combination of three Greek words ‘oto' for ear, ‘rhino-' for nose, and ‘laryn' for throat = otorhinolaryngology. This refers to a medical study and practice of the head and neck, especially the ear, nose and the throat - ; hence it's commonly abbreviated as ENT.
During the past 50 years, otolaryngology seemed to be taking a new phase of expansion into advanced specialty of the head and neck. Research depicts that otolarygological disorders links to other system disorders such as the neurotology (the study of nerves, especially ear nerves), audiology, and optometry. Hence otolaryngologists have to specialize also in these areas of study.
