What is Polypectomy?

Polypectomy is a surgical procedure for the removal of polyp. Nasal polyps are not cancerous but they arise due to chronic nasal and sinus infection. Otolaryngologists recommend Polypectomy as a safe option of nasal polyp removal. Otolaryngologists always strive to achieve permanent removal of polyps, but failure to adhere to treatment procedure may cause a patient to experience polyp re-growth.

For perfect removal, otolaryngologists use a microdebrider (small mechanical suction device). This device helps surgeons to do a biopsy of the removed tissue for malignance test.

Your doctor will ensure that any underlying infections are treated to minimize the risk of polyp re-growth. Depending on the extent of the surgery, your doctors will prescribe certain follow-up treatment options. Usually treatment options include steroid nasal sprays and antibiotics and oral steroids in other cases. After a sinus or nasal tumor surgery, you'll have to visit your doctor more regularly for check-ups.
